Fuel gauge problem

The diesel fuel gauge on my '89 C30 gives me only two readings: empty (once, at the start of the season) and full (ever since I refilled the tank for the first time this season. Since the first refill, I don't believe I've let in get more than 5 gallons below full, but of course I can't be completely sure of that. Any suggestions for simple solutions before I turn this problem over to the boatyard?

A Simple Solution

Dave The fuel sending units go south more than ducks on a pond. If you have a trusty engine hour meter, you should expect 1/2 gallon per hour on your engine (assuming a Universal M25, or M25XP). Run the engine 20 hours. Fill up with 10 gallons. Fuel tank is around 23 gallons on our C34, maybe less on yours. Who needs a fuel gauge? Stu

Sounds like mine.

On my C27, the gauge shows full until I use about 5 gal, then starts to come down. 3/4 tank indicated is really about 1/2 full. I have just learned to live with it.

What I did

I had the same prob on my 1982/30. I bought the $30 internal float from WM. Since the end of the season was near I knew I didnt have much fuel and took out the old one and replaced it with the new one. Once the old sender is out you can see why the guage doesnt want to work. The windings on the reostat break and open the circuit. Good lick and its only a 30 fix

mine went out

a couple of monthes ago. I do just what Stu suggested, you burn about 1/2 gal per hour. I have checked on the last 2 fill-ups and it is right on the money. according the manual the C30 or atleast my 88 C30 has a 18 gal tank. just keep up with the hours you run the engine.
