fuel gauge on when main circuit is turned on?

We have a 82 Catalina,got her home today from her frozen in marina up north and running threw the electrical .
My son noticed the fuel gauge go on when main power was turned on,engine key is in off position and not in accessory or run just off.
I took a lookski and the terminal for the fuel gauge is run to a always hot connection on the ignition instead of the run side.
My take is this is not right and should be changed any one thoughts ?

Sounds like

Sounds to me like you just have to move the fuel guage terminal wire, to a switched terminal. This was more than likely simply installed in error.

For SOME reason it has been wired this way and at least it works. If you don't like it, move it :doh:

Just move it from one side of the ON/OFF switch to the other..
