Fuel gauge malfunction on Hunter 380

I'm having a problem with the fuel gauge on my boat. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Has anyone else had trouble with this gauge? Is there a fix? Also, my holding tank gauge shows 1/2 full right after a pumpout. It moves progressively up toward full as the tank is filled, but I've never seen it less than half full. Any fix here? My water tank gauge works perfectly.

gauge problems

which gauges do you have? I'm having problems with my snake river fuel gauge-if you've got the snake river system, you may just have to calibrate the holding tank settings

Our Gages

Carl, We have the WEMA gages on our boat. The holding tank gage acts seemingly simliar to yours. I have had the tank opened up to witness an accumulation of very dense material, probably tissue and other matter. The float will not go to the bottom to allow it to read accurately upon pumpout. Our fuel gage works kinda okay. It read empty recently and took 25 gallons with a 35 gallon capacity. Our potable water gage hasn't worked since the first year. I have been contemplating replacing them with the snake river gages. good luck, Mike D

Update

My gauges are the original gauges supplied with the boat...it's a 1999 Hunter 380.

Potential Big Mess

Our holding tank WEMA guages (water and holding) failed. The water sending unit failed three times. The holding tank guage failed due to fatty solids building up inside the perferated tube. There is a float in the tube that needs to move freely. The solids eventually build up inside and prevent the full range of motion. Eventually the sending unit will be stuck in one place and fail to indicate a full holding tank. Then you could overfill the tank, have a messy leak, clog a vent line, or just plain make far more work then you really want to deal with. To solve the problem once and for all, I switch to the same guage Hunter puts on the new boats. The snake river Accu-Guage. Works great and has the sensors on the outside of the tank where clogging is not an issue. Additionally, the sensors are just metal foil strips with no moving parts. I will never again use a sending unit, especially for the holding tank, that mounts inside the tank. The environment is just too nasty for mechanical systems to work reliably with out periodic removal, soaking and cleaning. A job, I just wasn't interested in. Scott

Snake River Gauge

Anyone have a link to Snake River? My 376 has the wmea gauges and they never work 100%. Thanks.

First task at commissioning: Remove WEMA

Carl, We're on our third Hunter. The #1 task after commissioning has always been to replace the WEMA sensors with Snake River. I really wish Hunter would stop using WEMA... Cap'n D S/V Mollie Jean Hunter 380

Good prices, too. We've sold these to replace WEMA guages on hundreds of Hunters. See link below.
