fuel gage

My fuel gage has never worked. Bought boat 5 yr ago po replaced fuel tank but hooked up gage. Wires are hooked to sender but not to gage. what turns on gage light and gage? must the ingition switch be on or is their a breaker on the panel that turns the light onthe switch. Can i test the gage by hooking a wire directly to battery term.and the sender wire to the sender post.

Wiring a gauge is pretty basic. Here is one diagram: http://www.moellermarine.com/sites/moellermarine/files/gauge_sender_wiring_diagram.jpg . Do you know the mfg.? They probably have a diagram on their website. I don't think an electric gauge was a Hunter item. My 1979 H37C has a non-electric gauge. Many Cherubinis had no gauge at all.

On my boat the fuel guage is activated by a breaker on the panel that controls all the instruments ...mine is an '83 H27 I am finding that the guage is more or less accurate usually within a gallon or 2.
