Fuel Filters

I don't have a single doubt that this topic has been discussed, but I still do not have a clear answer, since opinions vary so much. On my 1992 Hunter 30, now there are two fuel filters (Yanmar 2GM20F):factory installed probably 30 micron and another small one on the engine - probably 10 micron. At the recent boat show in Toronto, I bought a Racor 2 micron diesel filter, as the guys suggested that this is the right thing to do. SO now I will have a 30 micron (or 10 micron, I won't know untill I get the old one out) filter as first in line than the 2 micron filter and than the small filter on the engine. Is this right or not? Is the 2 micron going to get plugged up quickly? What would be the right thing to do?

Start Big...

You start with the biggest number closest to the tank, and work smaller as you get closer to the engine. The big stuff clogs the small micron filters faster, so you filter the big stuff first.

Yanmar Filters

I've got a Yanmar 2GM20F in my H28.5. The small filter mounted on the front of the engine is a 2 micron filter.

Change every 250 hours

Or as necessary, according to the manual. If you have a good primary filter, then the secondary should have no problem.

Fuel

Also, I just bought a hand fuel filter in the form of a funnel to strain my new fuel through when I refuel.

Not a popular answer but....

Here goes, the 30 mcn element should be between the tank and the low pressure fuel pump. The filter mounted on the engine is a 10 mcn NOT a 2 mcn. There is no need to add any further filtration except a Baja filter when fueling. Please DO NOT use a 2 mcn filter element in your Racor. They "gunk up to fast and restrict flow to the engine.
