fuel filters for Deisel

I purchased an 86 Catalina 27 last fall. I need to replace one fuel line and would also like to add an additional filter. I changed the cannister type filter and I believe there must be a filter on the fuel pump. However, there is no mention of it in either the engine or boat manual. A parts kit I ordered from Universal deisels included a small screen and gasket which I assume fits at the bottom end of my fuel pump. My engine seems to be working fine and I am reluctant to work on the fuel pump without first finding out from some other owner if its necessary. Also, their is not a lot of space to add a racor water separater. Do I really need one with the additives now available to lessen the likelihood of water problems? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this problem. The boat sails as well as my 22 tanzer which is a compliment to catalinas.

I have a 87 Cat 27. The fuel pump does have a filter in the bottom and you should inspect it. There is a nut in the bottom Turn it and the bottom of the pump will come off. Reach in for the filter. Be careful it is fragile.I assume that cannister filter means Universal engine filter.The water separator/fuel filter can be added to the front starboard side of the engine compartment, next to the fuel pump. The problem is adding it before or after the fuel pump. Because of the space limitations, it winds up being after the fuel pump. I have a Dahl which is small enough to fit the space, but more effective than the engine filter. It has a transparent bowl, so you can see the condition of the fuel. It really is very necessary part of the system.Additives are a must. You need a biocide. Water accumulates on the bottom of the tank and algae grows. If you don't go thru your tank of fuel during the season, pump most of it out using the electric fuel pump and replace with fresh fuel mixed with a biocide.

Just as your question came out, the subject was discussedin the Aug issue of Mainsheet(Cat 36). Recommended that you check the fuel pump screen twice a year, check the magnet in the pump for particles. The tech editor said his water separator was also after the pump, and he re-plumbed it to be before the pump. However, I thenk the purpose it being after the pump is to allow the pump to be able to bleed the filter. Otherwise you would have to have a aqueeze pump in the line leading to the filter. The squeeze pump would then narrow the inlet hose diameter somewhat.
