Fuel Filter?

Should already be there

Typical 2GM has the filter on the engine and a pre-filter in-line near the drive shaft. This filter is vital for catching the debris and water that would otherwise migrate to the engine filter. Check the nearest boat in your marina for the set-up. And yes, Racor is what you want. The bigger the better, albeit there's probably not much space to get a big one in there.

Raycor 220 Series

I replaced the OEM Fram 110 series with a 220 series with a priming pump, spin on cartridge and a clear yellow bowl. you can get 2 micronor 10 micron filters, but the priming pump and clear bowl were the reason for the change on my '86 Hunter 28.5.

Re: Raycor 220 Series

Is your filter away from the engine compartment? I'd like to do the same for my 280 but the filter is sorta in the engine area and I've read that one should only use a metal housing for that location. Thanks!

Filter Location

Onthe 28.5, there is a partial vertical bulkhead behind the engine and the filter is about 18" behind that near the shaft log. Theoretically a fire in the engine compartment could spread back past the transmision and shaft to the fuel filter, melt the plastic bowl and feed the fire. Of course, by the time that happened the engine and fuel lines would be fully engulfed and the interior would likely be ablaze. I felt that engine malfunction in a busy channel was a far more likely evet. That probability could be reduced if I could inspect for dirt and water in the fuel filter bowl. That's just my rationalization.

While there are

a lot of Racor primary filters, with plastic inspection bowls, installed in or near engine compartments out there, I would check with your boat insurance company first before installing such a filter in or near the engine compartment. While the possibility of a fire melting the plastic seems slight, the possibility nevertheless exists. If you ever had an engine fire, the last thing you want then is for your insurance company to be a problem with a claim because of a non-approved filter installation.

What About the Rubber Hose

What about the rubber hose leading to that metal filter,a fire would burn the hose and plenty of fuel so I don't understand why the metal filter. I guess you could put a pre filter as soon as the fuel line comes out of the tank depending on your location and available inspection access, every boat is different.

Filter and hoses

Make sure your hose is Coast Guard approved. They require that the hose shrinks during a fire to the point of closing off fuel flow completely. It's also twice as thick as the other stuff. (SAE) Don't worry about metal bowls. Those bowls are Coast Guard requirements on commercial vessels. They also cost twice as much. Go with the Racor plastic. Your insurance company will smile and pat you on the head.
