I want to replace the fuel filter on my yamaha disel engine. My worry is getting air in the fuel line. Does anyone have any advice as to the best method to replace this filter and to avoid unwanted air.

no way to prevent it.

Barrie: There is no way to prevent this. The engine has a built in thumb pump on the starboard side of the engine. You can actually pump fuel all the way from your fuel tank, fill the primary filter and then fill the fuel system all the way to the injectors with this pump. To make the job a little easier, you can prefill the primary filter with fuel. You should also have a fuel shut off between the tank and the primary filter. If you turn this off before you open the system, it will make the priming easier.

Fuel Filter change

Steve is correct that there is no way to avoid air in the system when changing filters. If you have never done it, you may want to get a mechanic(or another owner who is mechanical inclinded) to show you how to do it. (it is a real confidence builder)Pre charging the filter works well and will make bleading the system alot easier. You should have both a primary and a second filter so don't forget to chang both of them.Good Luck !

Steve is right

Prefilling really helps cut down on the pumping of the silly bleed thing, which I'm sure is nothing more than a psychological placebo. And do indeed shut the fuel off back at the tank (inside the lazerette) or you'll have fuel flowing everywhere. Another idea is to top off the prefill by using a syringe like the one West System sells. Gets a lot of cc's of deisel in there just before you seal up the fuel filter. Both fuel filters, I should have said.

Pretty easy

I had my mechanic walk me through the filter replacement and prime as described below - easy! Hey, if a GIRL can do it :)

A fuel pump

If money is no object, and you never want to worry about this again even if you run out of fuel, install an electic fuel pump.

Remember this!

Barry, I was told to always raise the throttle to the mid postion before opening the fuel system. This relieves the pressure in the lines before you start opening up the system. An important little footnote, if true. good luck, Mike D

I tried that little fuel pump handle

and it sucks. I installed a bulb (ball) like outboard engines use between the tank and the pump.. It can really put the fuel to the system. When I first start the engine and it wants to die I just sqweeze the crap out of the ball and the engine comes roaring back to life. I've had the same ball for six years and it's about timee to change it out. Works great! Ron/KA5HZV

fuel filter change

if you don't have a primary filter before the small one on the engine, or it's a small one like the racor 110 often used on these engines, you could change it to a larger unit-better filter/longer life-the racor 230 series would be a good choice, and they have a priming pump built in that makes priming a breeze
