I have a Universal 30 on my C34, and had a leak in the filter. After replacing the filter (and filling it up with fuel) it seems as if the pump will not prime and sounds like it is only pushing air. My manual refers to bleeding the the lines to the engine however not sure of the process or if this is the problem. Can anyone help? Best Regards,

Yup, you got air, not fuel

Your manual should have more detail on how to bleed the lines of any air, as it is standard practice when changing fuel filters Try this site: http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/welcome.html

Try Bleeding again

Your engine has an electric fuel pump that comes on then the key is on. You should hear a clicking sound from the engine that means the pump is pumping. Just turn the key over but don't hit the start button. You need one person to do this while you bleed the fuel line. There should be a bleed screw on top of the fuel filter and another bleed valve between the filter and the fuel pump. Once you find these, open one at a time (the one on top of the filter first) and let the air and some fuel escsape. Finding the bleed valves is the hardest part. Good luck

Bleeding air from fuel lines

I just completed this task on the Universal 18 on my Catalina 27. Just as Walt mentioned, turn the inition switch on, then use a wrench to loosen the bolt that is located on top of the part that you screwed the fuel filter on. You'll hear the pace of the fuel pump clicking change as you do this. Tighten the bolt down. Look for a small knob (it's on the same side as the fuel filter, but about a foot towards the bow on a Universal 18). Turn this knob counter clockwise (again, you'll hear a change in the pace of the clicking fuel pump). Tighten the knob and it should start. The owners manual for my model lacks adequate pictures and graphics. Good Luck.
