I was wondering what the consensus was on where to have a fuel filter. I have a yanmar diesel and noticed that my fuel filter was not accessible to be serviced unless the cockpit floor was removed. This seems to be an inconvenient location especially if it was needed to be serviced in a hurry and in less than ideal conditions. I would prefer it to be under the companionway stairs so it could be easily accessed but there is not much room there. It could be done but would be crowded by the exhaust. Not such a good idea. Does anybody have better ideas?

Lyric's is mounted under the step on the starboard side. It is a tight fit but very easy to access. We have a 2GM20. Walt

Thanks for the reply. I think it would be a tight fit but do-able. I have an older style Racor that seems large for this application but perhaps bigger is better. I intend on doing the relocation and was interested in any overlooked aspects of negative outcome if placed under the step instead of being so far aft of the engine. I've a 1GM10 in a series 1, I fitted a fuel filter on the aft of the forward bulkhead in the starboard locker. The fuel tank is also in the starboard locker. Alisdair

I have just fitted a Beta 14 which provides access to water impeller and fuel filter from the front of the engine, so I was looking for positioning the pre-filter also in a easy to reach place. The Beta 14 has, in the front side of the engine block, treaded holes which serve the purpose. I could fit it fairly easily on my Vega series III. Depending on the height of the pre-filter, it may be not possible to fit it on previous Vega series.:) From: "yahoo@... i have just ordered a racor 500MA and also interested in the suject. My plan so far is to place it in the engine compartment, although i have to see how big the actual unit is. Hard to judge by the pictures. How often one can expect to drain such fuel/water separator. i figured placing it close to engine would make installation a breeze and the unit can be checked once in while by removing the companoion stairway which encloses the engine comp.

I am not sure I understand correctly the question: as drive shaft do you mean the propeller-shaft? And as seals do you mean the stuffing box?If so, here is the set up I am mounting (consider that I have a series 3 Vega):Beta 14: note that the current version comes with a "poly V" belt, an improvement compared to the Beta BZ 482 beltTransmission: Technodrive TMC 40 (reduction 2:1)Coupling: Centaflex type 12 (this, apparently, cannot fit the previous Vega series as a matter of space)Stuffing box: I kept the original, well functioning one. The mechanic who is doing the work on my Vega confirmed it is a good oneProp: I have purchased a 12"x9 as a spare. I purchased a Max-Prop feathering prop ("Easy" model, 3 blades) 33 cm diameter and about 20° pitch (this can be adjusted) - it correspond to about 13" x 9I keep the nyoil prop bearing I had beforeProp shaft: 25 mm diameter (the same as the original Vega control tube) length 1,5 m to be cut after checking on the spot. I plan to keep about 4 cm space between the bearing and the prop to allow space for a rope cutterI purchased everything from the Italian Beta importer (Scandiesel Marine - Motori marini per propulsione ) apart from the Max-Prop propeller Scandiesel Marine - Motori marini per propulsione Dal 1986 in attività nel settore della nautica professionale e da diporto, Scandiesel ha selezionato per la prop... I am thinking about the max prop but I don't know if a 3 blade 15" 12 pitch is really what I need as recommended by the us company.  Very expensive but.....Boat Model: 1977  Albin Vega - 27'1" Hull# 3227 Engine Make and Model: VolvoPenta - 2002 BT, installed 1990 400 hours Engine HP/Max RPM: 18HP(13kw)/3200 rpm 2800-3200 max Transmission Reduction Ratio: MS2BL 2.4:1Existing propeller diameter and pitch: big! It caused vibration but pushed the boat well..Number of blades on propeller: 3Shaft Diameter: 1"Taper dimension:Message: We restoring dad's boat that we have had since 1983. He installedthe engine and prop in 1990. I needed a new Cutlass bearing, and prop when Imistakenly had the boat yard glass it in . "Salt" had been just sitting in the boatyard for almost 2 years after a crane repairing a dock slammed it.The damage was minimal though. I thought I might just use an outboard tosave money and time since I had a long shaft outboard. .  Then before I put her in the water, I decided to put the Cutlass bearing and a prop back on and ready the engine. I may be wrong, but unless you fit an excessively long shaft I think a 15" prop is too big for a Vega. I've just fitted a 13x10 three blade prop and there's not a lot of clearance.A large prop shouldn't be a cause of vibration, is that not more to do with the engine/shaft alignment?Alisdair

The Max-Prop Company, like any propeller makers, utilizes specific formulas, based on boat displacement, engine HP and RPM, transmission ratio..., to propose the size of the prop, so I counted on them for this.Consider that the pitch can be regulated easily while testing the prop.For the shaft length, it depends on engine position and type of transmission and coupling. Consider leaving not more than 3-4 cm shaft length behind the bearing to reduce stress and vibration: the Max-Prop is heavier than a 3 blades fixed prop.:) From: "floraphoto@... My concern with Florance's figures is that, even though a 15" prop is recommended by the company, I suspect it will foul the hull.

The Max Prop company said that the prop should clear the hull by a distance equal to 15% of the prop diameter. I think you are right that a 3 blade propeller would not cause vibration but the shaft alignment. Well, the new cutlass bearing on my boat has been installed right into the hull not into a cone. The cone was destroyed when I had the shaft glassed in apparently. I am going to take a picture of it this afternoon. I will send it next post. Florance *Salt" #3227
