Hello All,
I just purchased a 1979 C30 and am trying to resurrect an A4 that has not been running for >2 years. I straightened out the electrical and am getting good spark. Went to empty the water from the fuel filter separator and can't find it! I traced the line from the tank to the engine and it's just not there, and I can't find any trace of a mount for it. (could be why the engine doesn't run). Would appreciate the location.
Thanks,
Everett

Fed up w/ personal attacks I'm done with SBO
On my '77 the filter/separator is located just above the shaft coupler, mounted on the inside of the fiberglass galley riser and directly below the galley drawers. I'm certain it wasn't factory installed.

As Neil implies, it is quite possible a primary filter does not exist, a common practice in the late 70s, particularly with the A4s. That's one of two common omissions, the other being a sea water intake filter.

I have a sea water intake strainer - thankful about that anyway. Neil's location is very convenient for access but being just above a whirling drive shaft would make me a bit nervous. The best tradeoff seems to be a spot on the setee riser forward & to the left of the engine. Unless there are other ideas that surface I may go with that. Thanks for the inputs.

just make sure whatever location you choose is accessible and below that of the tank for obvious reasons.

Everett,
The guys are right in their replies. A suggestion from my C30(1980) for the primary filter would be to mount it on the verticle side of the engine compartment on the 45 degree angled section. There you can mount it for ease of element changeouts & it's away from your coupler.

I mounted mine with thru bolts from the outside. If you don't want hardware showing, epoxy an aluminum angle or equal to mount the filter housing.
Remember to leave enough room below for a small bowl to drain water/fuel.

Good luck,
CR

Racor Filter

Everett,

I have an '81 C30 with an Atomic 30 HP.
My Racor fuel filter/water separator is mounted in the engine compartment to the left looking forward of the access by the transmission box. It has very easy access for changing every season.
