We are in the process of purchasing a 309. With the cost of diesel sky rocketing, I got curious of the fuel consumed in one hour. Does any one know. Our slip is 5 miles from the Gulf Of Mexico. Bad and good huh? Does any one know?

between 1/2 to 1 GPH

I would get a power boat if I were you... Gas is cheap!

Not bad on the fuel usage.

We have been there and done that. We both hate the chop, the ammount of fuel consumed and it is no fun going and coming back. We really do love sailing.

Our C34 with an M25 engine

21 hp gets 0.463 gallons per hour. For your boat I'd figure 1/2 gallon per hour. You do the math on hours per gallon and miles per gallon...:)

Here, let me do a little math for you.

At cruising RPM (see owners manual for your engine) you should use about 1/2 gallon per hour. Five nautical miles at 6 knots equals about 50 minutes of motoring, fuel used both directions about 1 gallon. If you go with the current both directions you can reduce this amount to maybe .50 to .750 gallons total for a trip out, and back. Sorry for the intolerance tonight. Still Jaded

Since our questioner is "in the process"

of purchasing his new C309, I simply thought it would be helpful to permit him to do some "homework" in figuring out the speed, time, distance equations for himself. Don't know if he has current where he lives, nor do we know how fast he plans to motor through the water. Suggesting parameters and allowing folks to learn may be considered to be quite far from intolerance. Mick, your calculations, however, were flawless. :):):)

Riding the tide and motor sailing.

This query has been most informative. Thank you all for the input. We will try to plan our departures and arrivals with the tides.
