The right Guest Charger
My 40.5 came with a Guest 2830 which is a 30 amp charger with three outputs to hook up three batteries. The dealer Ship & Sail installed it by the instructions with 1 output to the engine batt, 1 to house batt A and 1 output to house batt B. The engine batt was a conventional group 24 and the 2 house batts were deep cycle group 24s. No matter the state of any battery, the 3 outputs always followed each other at the same charging rate (as if the were NOT independent). The charger got fryed due to a leak where wiring goes to the console from the aft cockpit locker which is right above the charger so Hunter sent me a new one. I quickly lost my 2 house batteries from overcharging so the dealer said they would replace them so I paid them the extra $ to upgrade to group 27s. The new 2830 was defective and never dropped below 15.2 VDC so Hunter sent me a new one only in was Guest model 2833. It also cooked the engine batt so the dealer replaced it. The new charger is the PERFECT charger for my boat. In fact, I added a second house bank of 2 group 27 deep cycle batteries. The 2833 has two outputs, one is a 30 amps deep cycle batt charger and the other is a 3 amp convential batt charger completely independent of each other. I connected each bank of 2 house batteries to its own A-B disconnect switch and both of those switches to a third A-B switch which has the 30 amp charger (house)output connected to the load terminal and I connected the two panel DC feeds to its A & B terminals. The electrical panel I have is the P42 panel which has two DC source breakers on it so I ran a second #6 wire through the Hunter installed power conduit fron the aft panel to the panel in the Nav Station. (Thanks for the conduit Hunter). I have total control of all my batteries. And the 2833 has performed perfectly over the last 18 months. I check the level on all batts regularly but rarely need to add water, even in this Texas heat. At the slip, I only charge one bank at a time and switch banks once a week. Engine batt is always on charge and reads 13.7 VDC. Guest tech support said I had one of the 1st 2833 so they would check with me on how it works. I have been on the move so I guess I need to let them know I have put the 2833 through a lot since I live aboard and cruise all the time and IMHO they designed a great charger (knock on teak).
