I have a jibsheet winch on my H23 that won't turn. I tried lubricating it from the top but no luck. I'd appreciate any tips from someone who's taken there's off and torn into it.

Can't lube from the top!

Mike: I do not think that you can lube the winch properly without taking the basic parts off. Get instructions from the mfg of your winch on assy/dis-assy. Get a cardboard box and cut a hole in the bottom the approx. size of the winch base. Place the box over the winch so the box will capture any loose parts. Then you can start removing the bearings, springs paws etc. Get a coffee can or something to put all these parts in. Then you can soak them in a solvent that is compatable with your winch mfg recommendations (paint thinner etc). Get some winch lube grease and reassemble. You may be surprised how well it works.

Are they Barient or Barlow?

Mike, I have original instruction manuals for both winches that came on the 23s. Mine are Barient and it took no more than 15 minutes to disassemble, clean, lub and reassemble. I can email you the instructions if you like. Let me know which you have Ward

good stuff for cleaning

You can use one of the citrus cleaners available at any grocery store to clean your winch. Much less messy (and caustic) than a typical solvent. It's actually quite easy and should be done at least every couple years. There really aren't many parts. If the boat is in the water, also hang a cloth, rag, etc. vertically around your work area to avoid losing any parts (some are very small) overboard. Good luck!!!

Surgical gloves

Mike: Also when you start pulling these parts off use some surgical gloves. You will have very dirty, greasy hands if you don't.

Barlow

Thanks for the prompt responses All. Yes it's a Barlow, Ward. I was planning on taking it off and carrying it home to take it apart. It won't fall apart on me when I lift it from the deck will it? I did take my mast winch off and move it to the cabin top. I opened it and lubricated it with no problem. Wondering if the sheet winchs are different.

Won't fall apart!

Mike: What did you lubricate it with? There are usually 4-5 bolts that hold a winch in place. You may need to remove the top of the winch to remove it. This way you can hold the screws while someone unscrews the nuts.

Winch Repair

Mike: You will need to dissemble the winch. Likely you have a bearing failure. Probably you will just need to replace the bearings. The previous 2 owners of my boat were thoughtful enough to have kept the manual for the original Maxwell winches which came from the factory. I can send you a photocopy of the manual pages if your winches are Maxwell. Reply to kjkeen@att.net. - Kevin.

Will send manual...Yep coming back to OHIO

First.... Mike... I will scan you a copy of the Barlow instructions. My email is warkat@kctc.net. I need your email Mike Bacome... Yes we will be at the 2nd annual h23 regatta. Looking forward to it. Next weekend, we are pulling our 23 to the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior for a week. There are five boats going so it should be fun. Take care Ward
