This is the lens of a Seadog LED all-around Mast head light... that was in its package, since I didn’t get a chance to install it last year. I unwrapped it and found the lens had grown some crystals in the inside... weird.
I sent a photo to Seadog, and they replaced it immediately! Good show, Seadog! I have used a few of their products, and I have been happy. Things like u-bolts and such.

Anyway... any ideas what is growing in there? Ice9? . Should I open it and see what happens?

Hey Andrew, very odd looking crystals. Somebody’s probably smuggling drugs in the lamps. Get me a sample of the crystals and I’ll run a chemical analysis on them. I manage a chemical analysis lab. SEM-EDS, FTIR, Ion chromatography, GCMS...I got it all!

Fourier Transform Mass Spec? I see Gas Chromatograph! My ex ran a Chem lab, and she showed me the analysis machines. They had a superconducting FTMS... you couldn’t wear metal in the same room, or you would be immediately drawn to the machine and maybe stuck! Wristwatches were destroyed. To demonstrate, they put a wrench on a rope 6’ from the machine, and it kept that rope TAUT, pulling the wrench. It hung there in mid-air.
Did you get my reference to Ice9? Hmmm....
Something hinky going on here!

Unfortunately I had to look it up on Google. So just heat the lamp up to 115F and see if the crystal residue melts. If so, don’t open the lamp...wouldn’t want to end life as we know it on Earth. LOL.

I’m not familiar with FTMS, but FTIR is Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy. It fingerprints organic compounds. Scanning Electron Microscopy is for elemental analysis, and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy is for organic volatiles.

I’ll be glad to help you with the Hinky stuff if you decide to check deeper...at least you’re getting a free replacement. Might be best to just trash the contaminated mast lamp?

Yeah... I do not think they meant for it to be opened. My guess... it is cyanoacrylate glue. I built RC airplanes when I was younger, and I have seen that glue crystalize like that.

Totally agree neighbor.
When are you getting Firefly wet? We’re shooting for May 20th.

We don’t have a day pinpointed, but May 20 sounds good. She is light enough that we can launch her ourselves. I just got the new centerboard on yesterday!
