I just purchased a 1975 O'Day 22. First sailboat I have owned since I built a 27' luger 20 years ago. Anyway, there are some things that need attention, namely the front hatch. Does anyone know of a place, perferably in New England, that trades in used sailboat parts? I'm looking for a kind of sailboat junkyard. Thanks in advance for your any help you can lend me. Good sailing, David

Front Hatch for an O'Day 22?

You got a front hatch? Wow. I have a 1973 22', there is no front hatch. the front wall, and roof of the cabin are so curved that I don't even think I could fit a hatch up there, without modifying something heavily...

One place to check

There is one junkyard by me. It's in the town of Verplank, NY, called "King's Boatyard", or "King's Marina". Run by Randy King. He has one O'Day22 which he absolutely refuses to part out (believe me, I've tried!). But he has just about every concievable boat part from sail and power scattered about his yard. I would think some other hatches would fit, maybe. Depending on where you are in Connecticut, it might be worth a trip. But seeing as you've been into the boatbuilding, why not make one? A front hatch seems like a nice little project. By the way, in answer to Glenn's post, I also noticed that '73 O22's don't all have the hatch yet. My '74 does have one, however. Later, O'day made the hatch flush with the cabin top (more streamlined), and added a draining gas tank locker in the port cockpit seat. Those changes, the fractional to 3/4 rig, the "dinette" to the post table dining, and addition of a centerboard, seem to be all the major updates to the design.

Front Hatch

Unfortunatly, if your hatch is like the one on my '79, a replacement will have to be exact. The way the hatch is mounted as part of the curvature of the cabin top makes finding a replacement difficult

O'Day hatch

David I have owned a '73 O'Day 22 since 1988 and was always frustrated that it didn't have a front hatch. And I didn't particularly care for the opaque curved ones I had seen on other newer 22's. This spring I installed my own by building a curved teak frame to fit the cabin top and then inserting a Bomar hatch (about 14"x16" I think was the size)with the smoked glass window and black aluminum frame. It works and looks great, and I've had several compliments and no leaks. Had some trepidation about cutting into cabin top but no problems/ I had spoken to Rudy Nickerson(?) and he said not to worry about structural integrity there. It is located about 8" forward of the mast step. I sealed the cut by inserting a couple plywood support pieces between inner and outer hull and then used fiberglass cloth and epoxy and white paint to finish. Only drawback is view into V-berth when someone is using the head; but we're sailors after all, so no complaints.
