I learned something this weekend at the dock that I will hopefully never need to use but it's great to know. Old salts like Steve Dion and others surely know this, but I have never seen it discussed here. For those that don't know, it could save you a tow or worse. I was attempting to start the engine on our boat this weekend and there was not enough juice to turn it over. A guy at the marina showed me how to release the compression on each cylinder by flipping a compression release for each cylinder. The batteries had plenty of juice to turn the engine without compression, and once the engine was spinning, the lever on the #1 cylinder (the forward cylinder) was flipped back to the operating position and the engine sputtered and came to life. Then the lever on the #2 cylinder was returned to the operating position and the engine was running perfectly. He said this is a great thing to know for just such an occasion, and I guess a failsafe feature, in case you are at sea and this happens. I read through my engine manual when we purchased our boat, but unless I was on information overload (which was probably the case), I don't recall seeing this mentioned... Thanks, Joe S/V Charis

Been discussed before!

Joe: This has been discussed before and it is a great thing to remember. Hand cranking one of these engines is NOT my idea of a good time (whether you have the capability or not). As you found out, it takes very little juice to turn these engines over when they have been decompressed. I have had to use this technique myself (only once) but I do not know what I would have done if it had not worked.

Compression

Good idea to close all decompression levers at the same time. Yanmar rep informed that to run with any decompression lever in the released position means the strong probability of a bent valve. I have attached a bar link to all levers.

MIne Came that way

On my 3 cylinder Yanmar the three decompression levers are already linked together. I was told to cut the lever at the first link to do what was mentioned in this post. Glad I didn't heed that advise. Don't really want a bent valve just cause the battery is low... thanks.. Ron/KA5HZV
