I learned something this weekend at the dock that I will hopefully never need to use but it's great to know. Old salts like Steve Dion and others surely know this, but I have never seen it discussed here. For those that don't know, it could save you a tow or worse. I was attempting to start the engine on our boat this weekend and there was not enough juice to turn it over. A guy at the marina showed me how to release the compression on each cylinder by flipping a compression release for each cylinder. The batteries had plenty of juice to turn the engine without compression, and once the engine was spinning, the lever on the #1 cylinder (the forward cylinder) was flipped back to the operating position and the engine sputtered and came to life. Then the lever on the #2 cylinder was returned to the operating position and the engine was running perfectly. He said this is a great thing to know for just such an occasion, and I guess a failsafe feature, in case you are at sea and this happens. I read through my engine manual when we purchased our boat, but unless I was on information overload (which was probably the case), I don't recall seeing this mentioned...Thanks,JoeS/V Charis
