No...a VENTED loop isn't the opposite of a trap. But you're confusing shape with function...and a loop is an arch..a trap is a U--the opposite of an arch.

As for a "chemical" solution to smelly drains...Raritan C.P is a non-chemical bio-enzymatic cleaner that can remain in a sump or drain indefinitely without harm. The enzymes "eat" hair, soap scum, grease and all the other things that sink and build up in drains, sumps...and traps. Fresh water rinses alone won't clean 'em out. Anything else requires some manual labor.

Traps do not belong in drains on a boat.

Clearly we subscribe to different aproaches. They both work.

a. I understand the difference between a siphon break and a gas seal very well. Do not assume a person who disagrees does not understand basic things.
b. I have no need for chemical cleaners or treatments for the plumbing systems on my boat, any more than I need them in my home. I prefer engineered solutions that do not require regular involvement.
c. Long hair can be a problem, but not in a kitchen sink. Screens are the answer, at home an on a boat. CP is proably a fine chemical for drain maintanance, but I have not had seen the need on my boat. For others, if grease goes in the drain, it may well be their best friend. But I havn't clogged a drain at home or on a boat in 20 years, so I'm a poor refference.

No, I would not add a trap without a good reason.

I was curious what the difference between CP & KO are? I have a bottle of each on my boat and I have to admit they both smell like the same product. I have not tried it in the icebox/frig but will. It seems this has been an issue with most Catalina's. They are plumbed the same way and it can be a awefull source of odors. I find no matter how much I pump mine there is a residual backflow into the bottom of the icebox. I sponge it out to remove the last of the liquid. Could I just leave it there and add a few ounces of CP to it? I start each new weekend with a cooler full of ice that I pump out when we return Sunday evening.

Both are bio-active, but...

C.P is a cleaning product...K.O. isn't. Labs add subtle fragrances to products to help consumers tell 'em apart. CP and KO used to have slightly different fragrances--CP was kinda "fruity," KO was kinda spicy. The bottles I have at home still smell that way to me.

Neither K.O nor C.P. are "food grade" (approved for use around food)...the bacteria/enzymes in 'em would have the same effect in your lower digestive tract that they do in a waste tank or sump...so I wouldn't just squirt some into the ice box and leave it there. However, PureAyre PureAyre IS "food grade" which makes it an excellent product to use in fridges and ice boxes. Mop up the water with a sponge, then spray down the walls with PureAyre and LEAVE THE BOX OPEN so that plenty of fresh air can circulate...a warm closed up box is anaerobic, which means that any living critters in it will generate odor.

And...if I were you, I'd just plug the drain in the box and use a wet vac or dinghy bailer and a bucket and sponge to remove all the water when you close up the boat. And use PureAyre too.
