My grandson, 10, inadvertedly shut off the main switch from all to off WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. About 20 seconds later, I learned what he did and immediately shut off the engine. Then I put the dial back to # 1 and started the engine. It seemed alright. Did I damage the alternator and how can I tell ?

If its still charging all is good - The problem would have happened instantly when that switch was thrown - You didn't really need to shut the motor down. Once it was thrown to off, if you switch it back and its still charging, you dodged a bullet. its the voltage spike you trying to avoid associated with opening the circuit.
Wire the alternator + output directly to the house battery and you wont have to worry about this in the future. I changed mine since I have three little kids and I KNOW they would eventually throw that switch - I did it to my dad when I was their age ;-) He didn't dodge the bullet.
Probably not, BUT....
It All Depends on How It's Wired.
If your alternator output (AO) goes to the C post of the 1-2-B switch, then PERHAPS, and the only way to know is to run your engine and measure the voltage.
