fresh water tanks

I have a 1986 35' O'Day sloop. Due to the hurricanes in Florida I have had to be away from my boat since October and I am now preparing to return. I could use some advice concerning the fresh water tanks and cleaning. I have twin 25 gallon tanks and I believe both will need servicing. I will also need to replace the prop. I had a two bladed folding that was damaged, but was thinking of replacing with a three blade fixed. I'm hoping that I am remebering correctly that the shaft is 1" and it was a RH...can someone please confirm my thinking and recommend the best course of action from this point.Thanks,Don Hallmilemarkerone@yahoo.com

Don,The recommissioning of your water tanks is a fairly simple procedure consisting of filling them with a diluted mixture of Chlorox and water, leaving them sit for a period of time, and then flushing with clean water. I don't have the proportions for the bleach/water mixture readily available, nor the time it has to sit before flushing. Peggy Hall covers this in detail in her book, and may be willing to provide it again here.Regarding the shaft size, I have a 1989 O'Day 35, and the shaft is 1 inch dia. Can't help you with the prop issue, except that I believe it is RH.Ed.

Water and Bleach

Yup - bleach and water, many use a 10:1 ratio (water:bleach) and that is supposed to kill any microbials after just a few minutes. Used in hospital whirlpools as well of course those are scrubbed with the solution. Flush it out with just water several times after adding this cocktail though.
