Fresh water tank in the 25?

I bought a 1979 Hunter 25 last week, and have been spending every night on the boat refitting the interior. I found a fresh water intake fitting and hose leading from the starboard lazarette, curving down to mid-ships and disappearing into a fitting mounted in the bottom, directly below the cockpit sole. Forward of the intake fitting (about 8"), is a fresh water hose leading up to the bottom side of the galley sink whale (pump faucet). I'm sure I don't ever want to try to use this tank again, but I'm curious. Has anyone ever seen a molded-in fresh water tank like this? I called Mike Thomas at Hunter Marine, and he didn't know of any 25's that had built-in tanks. He mentioned that this may have been one of the Hunters sold as a "kit" boat, and that the kit owner may have built one in... Thanks in advance!

No reason not to use the tank...

Once you've cleaned it AND all the plumbing (or replaced all the hoses). Although I don't like integral tanks for other reasons, an integral water tank is no different from any other tank when it comes to the condition of the fresh water system if it's neglected. Those of you who can open up the tanks just happen to be able to see it for yourselves. The fresh water system should be recommissioned at least annually. You'll find complete instructions in the article "Fresh Water Maintenance" in the Head Mistress forum library (link is on the forum homepage).

I think ours had a bladder tank.

I think our Hunter had a bladder tank when we bought it new. Not sure what year it was but I am guessing that it was a 77-78. Clean it, use it and keep it sanitized.

Thanks!

Thank you, Peggy and Steve, for the info! I'll be looking closer into the system this week. I'll post something to the board if I find anything that might benefit other 25 owners...

Found a Bladder Tank

After searching the Cherubini forum archives, I found several references to a Hunter-supplied bladder tank located under the cockpit sole, behind the galley icebox. Sure enough, I found an old, nasty rectangular bladder tank laying in the bottom of the boat under the cockpit! Mike Thomas at Hunter was kind enough to suggest www.vetus.com for a replacement. They have all sizes of shape-conformal bladder tanks for fresh water.

Anyone have any luck finding a replacement rigid tank for under the cockpit? My recollection of bladder tanks is that they 'taste'. Maybe Peggy can shed some light on how to ensure that they don't. I just bought an H-25 and I can't find ANY tanks in it. The boat was used as a low-tech daysailer (head through-hulls were even plugged up). Calls for a total refit of plumbing systems. So any clues are appreciated! (BTW-- what IS under the forward footwell ends of the settee berths? There is NO access-- might be a good place for the holding tank?) JC 2
