My 82 h27 has a pressure freshwater system that has not been used for about 10 years. I am going to try it out and once I am sure it works I would like to flush the lines and tank. I don't plan to use this for drinking but would like to have clean water for a cockpit hose or deck shower down the road. I plan to tie into the galley supply line and TEE off for the deck shower. Will the pump supply enough water for something like this? Any suggestions on what to use to flush it out?

Bleach

The head mistress will tell you to mix bleach and water into your tank and than flush all faucets a few times over and over.

Two things, make sure the electric pump works and that the hoses don't leak. Once you have the system working then you can concentrate on cleaning the tank and flushing the hoses. Usually a diluted clorox solution will do the trick. Yes the electric pump should provide enough presure for a cockpit shower.

After you've tended to the hoses, pump etc...

It's time to recommission the system. I've posted the directions many times, so a search for "Fresh water maintenance" or "recommission fresh water" should turn 'em up again. If not, I'll post 'em again.

As for whether you plan to drink it...why not? If you follow the instructions to recommission--and do it every spring as part of the whole boat recommission--it'll taste and smell as good any water coming out of a faucet on land...and if THAT's not good enough to suit you, put a faucet filter on the galley sink.

Besides...you "drink" a lot more of the tank water than you think...you wash your hands in it, pick up a sandwich...wash dishes in it...water gets into your eyes, nose, mouth and ears when you bathe in it. So you might as well make life easier for yourself and ACTUALLY drink it.

I never used to drink water from the tank, that is until I found out that the wife was using it to make our morning coffee. It is hard down here to commission a boat that was never decomissioned and I'l be honest I never clean or flush the fresh water system. It does concern me that water may remain in the tank sometimes for months at a time as I have this notion that stagnant water will go bad. I have never gotten sick, always blamed the beer, but was wondering if anyone has any idea on how long does previously sanitized water may safely be stored at ambient temperatures?

"Treated" municipal water is safe indefinitely...

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't go stale...only that it's safe.

You never "decommission" anything, but hopefully you DO maintain your boat...you don't just "fix what breaks." Welll..."recommissioning" the fresh water system is actually annual maintenance...like changing the engine oil. Needs doing from time to time.
