Fresh Water Pump

Yesterday I noticed that there might be something wrong with the fresh water system on my 1987 Catalina 36. When I turn on the faucet in the galley sink, instead of a smooth flow as before, the water now pulses out, and with each pulse the lights dim, suggesting that something might be blocking the pump and causing an increased power load. Is this something that can be repaired, or does the pump have to replaced? If I have to repair or replace the pump, where on the boat is it located? I do not have the owner's manual.

Get the owner's manual either form Catalina Yachts, Catalina Direct, the C36 Association website or a neighbor with a C36. You can find the pump two ways: trace the hoses backwards from the faucets to the tank, or turn the pump on and listen for it. The pumps many times clog up because the filter between the tank and the pump is ineffective or clogged. The pump diaphragms can get clogged. You can repair or replace the diaphragm. If your 1987 boat has the original pump, you're doing just fine. Given its age, you may want to replace the whole pump and diaphragm assembly. Also, you may simply have run out of water in your tank.
