I had a new oberdorfer fresh water pump installed after the burning the impeller due to failure to have fresh water value open. After installation there was a slight oil leak where pump is bolted onto flange. Then the oil level kept rising even though I pumped out the excess. I am wondering if I blew a head gasket or is the pump defective and allowing fresh water into block. Any one have any ideas?

The story is about a Sherwood, same concept with the Oberdorfer. We have an O and like it. It explains how those pumps work, check out the blow up diagram in the manuals or at www.marinedieseldirect.com.

I believe you meant raw water pump.

Sometimes people who sail on lakes (i.e., freshwater as compared to saltwater) get confused.

The freshwater recirculating pump on the engine shoves the anitfreeze coolant around and is belt driven.

The raw water pump takes the water from outside the boat and slugs it through the heat exchanger and out through the muffler.

The fresh water pump provides pressure to the faucets in the galley and the sink.

That's how I remember...:)
