Fresh water pump malfunctioning

I had them install a fresh water pump for my 2001 Hunter 270. Well, it's not working all of a sudden. I filled up the tank, thinking maybe it's out of water...nope. A splash comes out of the faucet and I can hear it running, although I have no clue where it is. I think I have a year warranty, which is almost up.What to do?

Check the strainer.

Scott: On our Hunter there is a strainer on the outlet from the tank. You should check this to see if it may be plugged up. Maybe that some mfg. materials got sucked out of the tank and into that strainer. If that is not the problem, you could have a bad new pump.

Thanks Steve. Where, oh where, is it?

In the forward bilge area?

Tough to tell you where it is.

Scott: What you will need to do is find the fresh water tank. Then find where the hose exits the tank. This strainer should be very close to the tank drain (normally at the lowest place in the tank). Ours happens to be under the aft quarter berth. There is a storage compartment next to the tank and the strainer is right there.

A leak ??

Scott: Have you checked to see if it actually pumping, but not out of the faucets ? It may be going into the bilge if a pipe has broken, cracked, or otherwise damaged. If this was the case on my boat, the water would not go directly into the bilge, but would wind up there after following a circuitious route. Therefore, it would not be immediatly evident that the pump was pushing water into the bilge. Jeff

Update on pump

Well, I found the tank, and the pump, up there in the forward bilge. Easy access from a nice hatch. That bilge was holding water! Low and behold, it seems the hose somehow became detached from the pump. I just shoved it back in, no glue or anything, and it's working perfectly! Another problem solved by all your help, and I thank you!

No hose clamp?

Scott: Didn't the hose have a clamp on in? Most of them always do, so you should consider getting a good s.s. one and putting it on there. If it came off once, it will probably do it again. Did you ever find a strainer?

Steve's right-put a clamp on the hose connection!

There should be one on both the hose coming from the tank TO the pump, and the one coming OUT of the pump. Without clamps, the hose will just work off again and again. Do NOT use any sealant...just a stainless hose clamp (that goes for all hose connections, btw).

Well, about a clamp

It seems there is a clamp on it! The disconnection occured beyond that, like part of the pump. The part I so rudely jammed back in there was made of black plastic, like a tube with two ridges on it! you're right, I just know it's going to come back out, that's why I was thinking maybe to glue it in there, but it's hard to see exactly what's going on. Thanks for yall's help.

Scott!

Scott: The pump has a piece that should snap into place to hold those pieces in place. You want make sure that this doesn't happen again (don't u?).

Steve, maybe it's snapped in then.

What I'll do is revisit the area and give the thing a pull to see if it's in tight. Maybe the jamming action was all it took, that would be too easy though, I'm afraid. We'll see. Starting to get a little cold for sailing, so says the crew (wife). I have to visit the slip at odd hours to hang out. Thanks for the invaluable advice!

Final comment on pump

WEll, I took another look at it, and gave it a yank, and another. It seems to be firmly attached and not leaking, so that's the end of it till next time, I suppose. Thanks el mucho.
