Hi all. I'm considering the possibility of buying a preowned Hunter 34 (from the 1986 or so) but I have read some disappointing 'marks' on several ads. The say that these boats are for 'fresh water only' Does it mean that they are not designed for sailing in the open seas? Should they sail only in protected waters? Whats the reason for that? In addition I have seen that many of the hunter owners have their boats in rivers or lakes. Should you recomend this boat for a trasatlantic sailing wich is the one I have in mind? I am thinking in taking her from the US to Europe via Azores. I would really appreciate yours comments and sugestions. Thanks.

Fresh water only

Navigator, When you see fresh water only in the add, it normally means that the boat has been used only in fresh water, a lake or a river. It does not mean that you can not use the boat in salted water. No problem to use this boat anywhere. Often these boats are seen as more interesting for buyers as they have not been exposed to salt for the past several years. This is why the seller normally include this info in their sales pitch. Don’t forget a good survey!

On the other hand, if it was a wooden boat...

...then freshwater only would might be considered a liability, as the salt in seawater tends to help preserve the wooden hull.

"Fresh water only" is a selling point, not a limit

Salt water and salt air are corrosive and much harder on gelcoat, sails and systems than fresh water/fresh air, which means that boats that have never been in salt water are often in much better condition than "salt water" boats. "Fresh water only" is a selling point, not a limitation on where the boat should be used.

H 34 not a ocean boat

The H34 is a great boat and a very good coastal cruiser, thought it has been done i would not reccomend it for a transalantic crossing. I owned a H34 for 10 years and made severl Gulf of Mexico crossing in her but would be very causious of going any futher. well that is my two cents PS Blew Bayou never saw fresh water allways in salt water and was in excellent shape for a 22 year old boat when i traded her for a 93 hunter 40.5 last year. Any boat in this class is built to a price point that is good for what 99.9 % of the users there NOT built with the extra margin that .1% of the sailors would need There is a reason other boats cost so much more money Tommays
