I have questions about filling the fresh water tank on our Hunter. The previous owner said that he filled it from the access plug under the aft bunk. The boat has this fitting on the starboard side of the cockpit wall (see photo). If I attach a hose to it and attempt to fill, no water flows into the tank.

I have removed the fitting and tested it, water does flow from the outside to the inside side of the fitting.

Any thoughts on the purpose and use of this fitting?

Is there a check valve that is preventing water from enter the system. Secondly, shouldn't this fitting have a protective cap on it to prevent salt water, etc from entering the system since I have proven that water can flow inward?

Have you made sure...

that the hose to which that fitting is connected is connected to the WATER tank at the other end? That you haven't been putting water into your fuel tank?

However, after taking a closer look, that's not a deck fill fitting. It looks to me like a dock water hose connection.

You need to spend some time tracing ALL the plumbing on your boat to find out what's where and also what condition alll the connections and hose clamps are in!

I agree .. That is most likely a dock pressure water fitting.. It puts pressure water from a hose into your system downstream of the fresh water pump on the boat. It does not fill the tank and shouldn't .. The tank is filled from the deck type fitting.. I forget where that is on a 31..
The idea of this is that you can have pressure water in the boat at dockside and not have to use water from the tank nor do you have to run the pump. Yes, it should have a cap on it.. There are folks who'll note that this type fitting has sunk a lot of boats when hose clamps slip or pipe parts crack when hooked up and the owner is away.. Ya want to (like Peggy says) check this out carefully and not hook up to it until you've looked at all the fittings and clamps between this and the water pump.. It can be a convenience, but needs to be used and maintained carefully. Good luck with it, Bob..

Claude and Peggy:

That makes sense, I have traced the line it leads to the fresh water system after the pump.

I have yet to find a fresh water fill fitting that is topside. I have fuel fill for the Yanmar (starboard flush to the deck near the aft cleat) and the holding tank pump out (starboard, ahead of where the standing rigging attaches).

Bob, Seems like I remember someone saying that the water fill on a 31 is in the lazarette?? Open the dooors of the helm seat/lazarette and look around on the floor of that locker.. Someone with a 31 will respond when the rain from Lee quits..

Hi, on my Hunter 31, I fill the fresh water tantk through an opening that's at the stern under the back rail in the middle of the boat(beside where the emergency tiller fits in). There is a piece of teak about a foot long that lifts up and the opening is under there.

I have an 84 31 and the fill yube is under the stern starboard lazzerette it has a blue cap to signify FRESH water. Mine is also set uup so when I have "CITY" water hooked up via that fitting you show in the PIX ( mine is on the outside port side) I can opena valve and fill my tank. But look in the stern starboard lazzerette it should be there.
