Free Swing Keel Damage

I am considering purchasing a 25' Catalina '82. It's a beautiful boat...with one problem. Apparently, two years ago, the cable broke on the swing keel, the keel free fell and did serious damage to the hull. In fact, the boat actually sank! THe damage was repaired, cable and wench replaced, and the boat has been completely renovated. It is in the water so I can not see the hull repair. The price is excellent. But I'm not certain whether I should take the chance. Anyone with any opinions? frjackd@priest.com Thanks, Jack

Pay for a haul-out

If the boat is really worth it, and you think this is the one, pay for the haul-out (do it during the week and save a buck or two). Diving is another option but things don't look the same underwater. Or, you could trailer it out, but the movement of the keel is limited to the trailer specs. Ask the seller to split the cost of the haul-out with you. If he has nothing to hide, he probably will.

Consider a survey

If you are serious about a boat, then consider having the boat surveyed. Having another set of eyes look over the boat is really helpful (identifying problems areas, maintenance issues) and educational (accompany the surveyor, ask questions, and learn about the boat's systems). Part of the survey (interior, deck, rig) can be conducted while the boat is in the water, and then the exterior hull inspection is conducted after the boat is hauled. The results of the survey can be used in your final negotiations. You can never have too much information about this particular boat.
