We are looking to buy a boat in the Northeast for day and weekend sailing for two couples. We're very interested in a 1994 Hunter 36 Vision. It has a free standing mast which is something we haven't seen on many boats. I can see the pros of this system - no standing rigging to get in the way or break down, large main sail for easier sailing. What's the down side? Could anyone give their opinion on this kind of setup? Thanks!

1. The mast is very expensive, driving up the cost of the boat vs. competitors.
2. The mast is heavier than a shroud supported one, causing more weight aloft, requiring more ballast and a heavier boat for the size.
3. Some sailors are concerned about the non-traditional (?) aspect of the rig, narrowing the potential market.
4. Some sail controls are not as effective.

Having said all that, I sailed one for nine years and would take a well-designed one in a heart beat. I loved the clear deck, the quiet in a seaway, the convenience, the ability to carry canvas in puffy conditions, sailing on the main only for casual day sails with inexperienced crew and the comfort not worrying about the rig staying up.
