hi all, just finalized a bid for a used diesel. The engine is clean and intact. It has a problem i thought i would bounce off you all. It is reported to be hard starting. The po said it never starts without releasing the compression. He also says that it turns over slow and was thinking about using a "SUPER" diesel battery to see if that helped but just replaced it with new yanmar. I don't know much about diesels. I will check it out-compression, have injectors tested/cleaned, change oil and filters, etc. Was just wondering if someone might know what the problem might be. He said that once the motor is warmed up it starts better. he even added a manifold heater to help it some. Once the motor is running it runs great-he says.
thanks, Patrick

Everything starts better warm LOL
Sounds as though you may need to have the starter rebuilt
before you can check the compression.

I have a series 2001 engine. I have learned to

reset the fuel rack by pulling the stop cable a couple of times before I push the button. The engine starts on about the third compression stroke every time. The instructions are to start on a wide open throttle. I use a pair of group 31 batteries for starting and house. Mine has been in service for 9 years and had been sitting in the crate for many when I bought it.

You Volvo is a great engine and easy to work on, although parts are a bit pricey. My 2003,when I purchased my boat, was also hard to start in the winter here in the panhandle of Florida. New (rebuilt) injectors didn't do the trick. I had the head overhauled at a certified Volvo dealer and the engine runs like new, starts easily and uses very little oil with approximately 2500 hours.

thanks

thanks for the info and suggestions. The po also stated that it comes with a hand crank but it is useless because you will never be able to ctank it by hand. Patrick

one more thing

the po said the motor pushed his 35 foot gib'sea at 6-7 knots at 1300 rpm with a little two blade prop. Is this possible? He says the Gib'sea is a light boat. I am wonderring if i use his prop or stick with whats already on the boat. Oh in case you forgot its a 1975 Morgan outisland 33 footer. Patrick

I push my Islander 30 about 9,000-10,000 pounds

to 5.5 knots with a 10 hp 2001 engine ,3:1 reduction gear and a 13x13 three blade prop. With a 13x7 two blade it wasn't that fast. The smaller prop didn't load the engine properly.

Rule of thumb

When a boat is powered/repowered the rule of thumb is that you need about 1hp for every 500 lbs of boat weight.

10,000 lbs boat needs abut 20hp.

PS: The engine has an "automatic" cold start device. After you shut the engine down set the throttle at 1/2 throttle and pull the stop out and push back in. If you are close to the engine you should hear a "click" coming from the front, port side. The cold start is now engaged for your next start.
