hi ya'll, got my new old motor home yesterday. Two of my boys helped me build a dolly/pallet for it and a ramp to roll it out of my truck. We used an old block and tackle (small mainsheet) arrangement to ease it down with one on each side. Went amazingly well. My boys were interested, maybe even alittle excited to do this kind of stuff. Hell they were even arguing over who's turn it is to use the screw gun next!
Then we rolled it into the carport and started looking it over. I took the valce cover off and we looked at push rods, etc. I think i will have to rebuild it. Not from the condition of the top of the head-it was clean. But, because it does'nt crank with the handle at all. the po told me it never did and was slow cranking and hard to start since he owned it in 2000. Any ideas on low cost/quality parts for a 2003 model volvo penta? I will remove starter and have it checked/rebuilt as the first thing to do. But then i think i will remove head and check cylinders for scorring and such. Have already learned alot and Nigel Calder's "MARINE DIESEL ENGINES" is invaluable. Just an update. Patrick

Wait!

Don't take it apart yet!

I highly recommend soaking the cylinders in something for a few days - Marvel Mystery Oil, or PB Blaster or equivalent. Then try to crank it by hand. Use the compression release if there is one.

If you get it running and it smokes, there are things you can do short of rebuilding it.

Ross

Hi Ross, why is it a good place to start by calling Vick? Is he really cool or something? Don't mind the sarcasm...just a few minutes ago had a upper molar extracted sort of. The dam tooth broke and the doc had to get out the chisel and hammer and chunk it out. Even had to put 3-4 sutures in it to close the gapping hole it made. Guess its my old standby...Captain Morgan and pain killers.
JVISS-thanks for the reply but the motor has been hard starting for over 8 years now...doubt whether soaking the cylinders is gonna free it up. Besides, if the rimngs were stuck it would need to be decarbonized anyway would'nt it. I would realy like it if i could give the engine a "magic pill" and have it all be better, but i am somewhat scepticle. To get it in the boat and all installed is going to be alot of work and i don't want to have to do it again any time soon-(read probably never). So i want the motor to be as fresh as a clean baby. This boat is gonna slip docklines and dissapear with capn as hostage. Thanks, Patrick

Hey Patrick, congrats on the engine

I am glad to hear that your kids are getting involved with this project also. Perhaps the weed smoker can pick up some mechanical skills while spending some quality time with you and your other son!
I would not dismiss Marvel Mystery Oil so quickly (or JViss for that matter). You could soak the cylinders and the whole damn crank case in the stuff for a few days just to see what it might do. I use this stuff in the cylinders of my Atomic 4 (gas) engine on the advice of Don Moyer who is a bona fide engine mechanic and all around good guy. http://www.moyermarine.com/
Marvel Mystery Oil is a rust reducing/inhibiting lightweight oil (approx. 5W) with a bunch of rust reducing additives. It is one of the few 'snake oil' engine products that actually seems to do something useful.
You are going to need a can of PB Blaster as part of your machine shop if you are planning on overhauling your engine. PB Blaster works great for loosening stubborn bolts and studs. Be forewarned though that it eats rubber so use it carefully around hoses and belts etc.
Of course you have a decent Metric and standard socket wrench set for working on the Volvo?
Good luck. Keep us posted.

thanks CaleB

I am sorry if i seemed like i was blowing off jviss' advice. I thought about it myself. I would love to just (drain the crankcase?) and squirt some mystery oil into the cylinders and have a strong motor. You have convinced me to git it a try. I just thought that this was an inherant problem with 1980's 2003 series volvo and would'nt be an easy fix-as is my usual lick.
hey, the "weed smoker" is off the juice. Apparently, he decided he really needs a "JOB". HE IS 22YO andlivews with my ex. Patrick

Scott you mean like this?

Engine cover and companion steps out of the way.

Compression

Have you checked the compression? I was going to check the compression on my new/old engine but got anxious and pulled the head to find a pitted piston and pitted cylinder sleeve.
I would use the mystery oil, let it soak in to free any rings that may be seized and then check the the compresson.

SORRY SCOTT

Sorry Scott. I read my last post from yesterday and it is condescending. I did'nt mean it that way, sorry. I had a bit too much captain in me.
I will paint it up real pretty. Ross has it so nice that i think you could eat off the engine room floor! Go Ross!
