My Hunter 25 has a nasty looking fray in the main sheet. I'm going to get new rope and splice them together to get the new line in place. can anyone tell me how long that line needs to be? I'd rather not waste money one an extra 20 or 30 feet if my guesstimate is wrong. It looks like it should be about 80 feet long, unless I'm way off.

Contact the store on this site. They have good prices and know what you need.

You propably should find out what caused the line damage before you install a new one.

I'm new to this, so I was kind of assuming it was old age. The registration on the boat is from '08. It hadn't been hauled out in 10 years. What are some things I can check to try to determine the reason that one line is bad? Thanks very much.

Quite often it is caused by a broken sheave (top of mast). I would have them inspected before you replace a line.

Are we talking about the main sheet, or main halyard? A mast sheave will not cause a problem on the main sheet. Most likely it is age and sun.

I thought it was a halyard, but one of the guys walking around the marina said it was a sheet. It's the rope you use to raise the mainsail after clipping it to the top of the sail.

that is the main halyard. Halyard is a term for raising and sheet is a line for controling the sails.

Take the advice and inspect the sheve on top of the mast before running the new line as it can damage a halyard if worn or something is wrong with it as Dion points out.

thanks. I will check that when my friend brings his chair over so I can get new bulbs in the anchor light and night time running light.

An easy way to remember; Sails used to be hung from yard arms. The Haul Yard was used to raise and lower the yard arm.
