I have been unsuccessfuly looking for the Kubota serial number on my Universal M18 engine for quite some time.

I have read that it is "Not really easy to see but it is stamped in the block near the fuel injector pump".

Does anyone have anything more specific than that and what types/sequence of alpha and or numeric characters I am looking for?

Thanks for any help from Universal diesel owners.

I had an M25. I could never find the serial number but I was able to comb thru enough Kubota info until I identified the block model and the tractors that used it.

On the M25 there's a flat part of the block, facing up, immediately inboard of the injection pump. After I scraped the paint away I found the numbers were filled in with putty. :). But, once I had the serial I could use Kubota parts, which were readily available at a local agricultural machine dealer, and much, much cheaper.

Many parts don't require the serial, but that's always the first question.

One example, I blew the bearing on the water pump right before a vacation, on a Friday, as I recall. The Universal pump would have taken 'til Tuesday to get, at something like $325. The Kubota pump was in stock at the ag supply place for $65. An extra buck for the gasket!

Good luck.

What I learned at my Kubota dealer was that they didn't have access to the marine engine parts. That's why finding out the block size was so important. For the M25, once you had the block size you could google for parts manuals. I found the complete parts list and engine manual on line for my D950 block. Those manuals have the standard (not marine but equal) part numbers that make them available locally. Try googling M18 Kubota equal. You might also try the Catalina 30 group. They have extensive engine files and the M18 was used in Catalinas.

I finally found it stamped in the block on the smooth horizontal surface just below the fuel injector pump bleed screw. Underneath the blue paint that was underneath the gold paint.

Thanks again to the above for their help

Great!

I wish I could figure out the model and serial number of my Mitsubishi-based Westerbeke 38B-Four.

If you look on the right side toward the front of your engine you will find the model there. Sounds like it is a K4. Mainesail did a post on it on Mar 1, 2021 on this site.
