Once again the knot meter was fouled all season. On haul out it was a garden of sea vegtables again. I painted it with anti-foul with copper in it and it didn't help. How do you keep your's clear and functioning? What make Knot meter do you use?

knotmeter

I pull my knotmeter out from the inside and put a plug in its place. It's tricky at first but becomes fairly simple after a few times with little water entering. I can't remember the make off hand but its common manufacturer. good luck, Jack

Same as Jack

A very thin coat of anti-fouling and then only put it in when sailing. The timethe boat spends at dock the tranducer is in it's little holder and the plug is in it's hole.

Plug the hole, get an E-Trex GPS

When my knotmeter busted I used an ETrex hand held GPS, also good for hiking in remote areas. Cheap-$100 and may be an alternative to a knot meter. Glenn WindWisp

Don't pain, just pull...

Copper paints will affect the spin, just pull it and bung it after every use. Period. The new Raymarine transducers have a little flapper in the through hull that makes for much less water when you pull it. B Glen- how do you measure the tide push/pull with no through the water speed? :)

I apply a liberal amount of Desitin to the...

impeller to keep marine critters from forming because they dislike the zinc oxide that it contains. I've used it on all the bright work below the water line and it normally last about two seasons. Terry

WOW

Wow, I didn't expect any replies for a few days! I guess I'm just chicken. I probably could pull the transducer, even though it's 12 inches below the water line, I have the plug, but I can be a klutz at the worst moments.... I will try the zinc just the same. So no-one has a favorite MFG.?

Don't be a chicken!!

As long as you have the correct plug near-by you'll be OK. Water will enter so make sure there is nothing in the immediate area that can't get wet. S R instruments is what I have and I have been very happy with them. The instruments were looking old after almost 20 years of service, I sent them back to S R instruments and they refurbished them for very little money. They also offered me a big trade in discount for new stuff that would fit the same holes but I opted to have mine refurbished. You can googel S.R. instruments or call them at 1-716-693-5977. { this is not a commercial, he asked} Good luck, Jack

Transducer Paint

...is available in a small ounce bottle. It is designed for depth transducers, but i use mine on the paddlewheel and it holds in SoCal's moderate-fouling area for six to nine months. You have to put it on thin enough so that it does not 'glue' itself to the housing. Two coats are best. It may mess up the calibration slightly, but I have never noticed a material difference. Probably well within the normal error ratio anyway. Works for me. Rick D.

hasn't worked in years.

There has only been a couple of times I wish I would have had it to gauge the speed of a tidal current but other than that I do not miss it. It was to tedious a job to keep it working.

Its real easy

When you're done sailing for the day, pull it out and put the plug in. Next trip back to the boat put it in again. You will never need to paint it or clean it or worry about it. I do it and it takes all of ten seconds.

I guess the degree of difficulty

depends on the boat and location of the transducer. On the H320 is under one of the sole boards (easy) on the H27 is in the port setee under stored items. (not so easy).

I wonder if...

The zinc oxide can be applied underwater. I was thinking of doing this when next I jump in the water. Should be able to do it as the zinc oxide does not desolove to well in water. Hmmm... I just don't like pulling my wheel out everytime. I fear I might weaken the glass or thru-hull to a point where it could leak or even fail.
