This may be a silly Question but does anyone know the routing for the line to the rudder. I just got the boat and the way the rudder lineis rigged doesn't allow it to be raised. It seems to hold it down. The rudder is in an alum. housing , pivioting on a bolt. It can be lifted by hand (on trailer) but not by its line. Thanks

Look at my diagrams

I think the 23.5 is the same . I have a scan of the rudder on my picture album at this link.

H23 and H23.5 rudder system not the same

I have a 1986 H23 and my rudder system works just as yours, which is per the drawing in the owners manual. On the 23, the line thru the cam cleat is just to hold the rudder down.....not up. If your rudder touches bottom, the line will slip thru the cleat and the rudder will come up. When trailering, just take the rudder off. I'm sure that an uphaul line can be rigged, but on the 23's rudder, a substantial amount of the weight is below the pivot bolt.

Rudder operation

Ernie, if you notice I checked that this applied to model 23.5's and the drawing I referred Mark to is a 23.5 drawing. For your information on a 23.5 the rudder can be raised but only slightly. You must hook a rope through the lifting hole on the back side and then lift it up for trailering. Maybe the 23 is different so list your diagram and try to help Mark instead of attacking people trying to be helpful. Fred

Thought I was helping!

Sorry if you thought I was attacking you, Fred. I thought I was helping Mark by letting him know that his rudder system is working correctly. If I had access to a scanner, I would scan in that page from my owners manual.

Sorry If I took it wrong .

I'll solve the problem by only responding to 23.5 stuff from now on. I'm no expert I only enjoy sailing. Fred

H23 Magic floating rudder :)

The control line on a 23 rudder is to pull and hold down the rudder. To raise the rudder, just release the line and it'll float up (at least that's the plan :) ) Greg
