Been There

Tom, When I bought my Catalina 27 the PO stated the throttle lever worked backwards. Push foward, go back, pull back, go foward. When I asked why, he said it was always like that. Since it wasn't a show stopper I made the sale on what has become a super boat. I looked over the situation to determine if I could reverse things, but the connections just didn't support a change. Later, I was taking her out, put the gear in reverse, backed out, went to netural and the lever broke off in my hands. Still in the slip area, pulled the jib out and sailed all the distance to the slip behind mine, about 30 feet. After a serious dismantle and research, I verified somewhere in my boats past a PO went from the original Universal Diesel 5411 to a Yanmar 1GM. In doing so he never replaced the Edson clutch throttle controls system. The setup placed an undue strain on the lever inside the pedstal so it broke. I replaced it with the one designed for transmissions that go into reverse when the cable is extended at the pedestal end or for harder to shift transmissions. It has been a year and it works like advertised, no pull, no strain. There is a lot of good advice given by the salts here. Try a few or buy a new clutch throttle controls system if necessary.
