I removed the galley of my '77 Catalina 30 in order to replace hoses, clamps, check and tighten etc as preventive maintenance. I installed a new heavy duty Morse Cable clamp on the transmission shift cable and started the the Yanmar 2GM (13 hp). When I started it and shifted it to forward it did as it should, then to reverse and again OK. However when I put it in neutral it was in forward. Adjustments made in the cable position but no change. Disconnected Morse Cable and shifted by hand. Click it goes into forward, click it goes into the neutral position but still going in forward, click into reverse and reverse it is. There is a small "sweet spot" between forward and neutral where the shaft does not turn however it is not where it should be at all and using the cockpit shift lever it is difficult to find without watching the shaft coupler. Has anyone ever experienced this sort of problem? Feel that I may have to pull the trans this weekend and drop it off at the marine engine shop.

It's Broken

Removed the small side cover where the shift lever goes into the transmission and got the boad news. The sleeve that the shift mechanism fits into was broken right in to. I have a feeling that this occured late last August as we were leaving the docks at La Connor Washington and it went "clunk" twice and jumped out of forward. I re-adjusted the cable and away we went a short time later. Funny thing is that it has been broken for some time and a lot of hours motoring and kept on going. So tomorrow morning I have to remove the transmission and bell housing plate and deliver them to the marine engine shop as I need to ascertain what other damage is done to the cones inside. Ouch this is going to hurt $$$.
