My previous boat was an 1985 Hunter 40 so the same vintage as yours. Mine had the holding tanks that were built in (an integral part of the hull and it's frame work stringers) rather than removable/changeable tanks. Not all the 40's from those days were set up that way. If yours is the same then it is 13 gallons. Both the aft and forward holding tanks on mine were 13 gallons.

105 gallons for a holding tank?

Are you sure it is 105 gallons for the holding tank? A holding tank is a poop tank. That just seems to be awfully big. It sounds more like the size of a fresh water tank. Even for a fresh water tank, it is still pretty large, but nice to have though.

13 more realistic

I think the 13 is more realistic-- the 105 is the water tank. THanks for the posts!

105 is freshwater

105 is the freshwater tank. It is under the aft portion of the v-berth. The built in forward holding tank is just forward of the freshwater tank under the v of the v-berth. The aft holding tank is a lid glassed in over two stringers under the main salon floor next to the nav station. I repaired leaks in both tanks on my old boat. The aft tank lid broke loose from the stringers due to the boat flexing over 15 years and the front tank had a crack where the pump out hose was connected. The rear tank was a pain to fix but in end worth it since I didn't have to use up valuable storage space or re-route sewage lines to install a real tank.

13 Gal Aluminum Tank

My aft tank is an aluminum tank in the bottom of the port locker in the aft stateroom. I don't know of any tank in the floor adjacent to the nav station. How about the forward tank? The previous owner claims to have never used it is it built in or a seperate tank? Thanks for all of the help!

On my boat

both tanks were an integral part of the hull (ie built in) niether was removable or replacable. If I had gone with a replacable tank instead of doing repair work I wlould have had to relocate all the plumbing and put the tank some where else such as under the port settee or in the bottom of the aft port locker like in your boat
