need to replace the forward hatch on my 1979, 27 footer. The hatch is a trapezoidal shape. Where can I find such a hatch?? Will I have to put in a square hatch for replacement?? Dave

Make one

Mine is in pretty sad shape so I plan to remove it and use it as a template to create a new one. Of course I'll use better wood and glue than what was there before. It appears to be thin laminations with an outer wrap of Formica like material-- I doubt it's original. (78 H25) s/v Clewless

Trapaziod, or a square one

I'm doing the same job this winter. I have found three options: 1. Use a trapeziod hatch like the original (which was _not_ wood/laminate). I think the link below has it. 2. Recut the hole in your deck to fit the square that fits the long edge of the trapezoid. Then you have to seal the opening with glass and epoxy to keep the balsa sandwich dry. 3. A recent post for an h25 that uses the same hatch had an ingenious solution: Buy a flat hatch that mounts to the deck surface only (doesn't go down into/through the hole in the deck. Then there is just a trapeziodal hole under the square hatch. I'm considering 1 or 2, but 3 is a good solution, too. Let me know what you decide, and I'll do likewise. (Going to West Marine today to look at square hatches.) David Lady Lillie '77 h27

Replace with square hatch

I have a 1978 h-27 that had the trapezoidal hatch. I also needed to replace it. They no longer make the same size and replacement with any other size would require cutting the deck. The cost of the trapezoidal shape was much highter than a square hatch. I went with a standard Bomar square hatch. If your are interested in my experience I have a set of how to directions and a sketch I can e-mail you. You can contact me at nelsonhow@netscape.net if you'd like me to send you the instructions. Just give me your email address and I'll send them along. Howard

I used the square hatch.

Hello all, I used the square hatch on my H25. It was a Lewmar Ocean 60, and is available through most marine stores (West Marine, Boat/US, Boater's World, Defender, etc). Lewmar makes 2 versions of this hatch- one with a flange that fits into the hole in your deck (if the hole is square...), and the other without a flange which can be mounted flat to the deck surface. I used the flat version (as the flange won't fit into the trapezoidal hole). All of the hardware on the hatch fits into the hole in the deck rather nicely. The project took me about 2 hours to complete, although I must admit I didn't do my best work on this one- I was more interested in stopping the leaks than getting it to look good. I'll post pictures of my finished work soon. --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Found a replacement

After talking to the guy at ThriftyMariner.com, (Where I got 1 hatch and 8 perfectly fitting ports) I was directed to Sailorman.com in Ft. Lauderdale who carries a Bomar 2092 for $319 plus shipping, that will supposedly drop right in. I have ordered one and hope it will fit as well as everything else I have replaced on my 1983 Hunter 27.

Let us know, Please,

Hi Chuck, Please let us winter fixer uppers know if it "drops right in". Wow, Worton Creek! Our family used to moor our Pearson 30 there, early 70's. After that we moved to Skipjack Cove on the Sassafras River. Good sailing to you! BestRegards

Update

I spoke with Bill at Sailorman in Ft. Lauderdale, and he said that my hatch will be shipped 12/27. Hopefully, I will be able to let the list know how well it fits just after the first of the year! Everybody cross their fingers!

Hatch

Got one from Bowmar 4 or 5 years ago. A very nice hatch and the fit was close. Had to do some trim of glass and used 3m5200 to seal it. It has never leaked, and continues to look very nice. e

Bowmar trapizoid hatch

I installed a Bowmar trapizoid hatch on my 79-27 in the early 90's. at the time i worked in a machine shop so easy matter to mill off side rails and corners of spigot [portion that drops into deck opening]this made excellent fit. same could be accomplished with a grinder and file.Ibedded in 5200 and to date is leak free.If you need any further info on this cotact me at qldman36@msn.com
