Has anyone replaced the forward hatch? Which brand/style was the replacement? Any advice on the installation? Thanks.

What condition is your hatch in

that warrants its replacement? I bet you can fix it.

It's fixable, but.....

just thought that I might like to have some light in and a view from the v-berth as well.

I thought that Mike Epp did something with his forward hatch a few years ago . Mike is usually around if you dont get a reply soon you might try to email him through the owners list. If that does not work you can reply to me and I can try to email him . Mike

Well, in that case

You could cut an opening in the existing hatch, then attach a piece of 1/4" or 3/16" Plexiglass (acrylic) or Lexan (polycarbonate) on the underside using 3M 5200 adhesive sealant. Ideally, the clear plastic should be about the same size as the hatch, and I'd leave at least three inches around on all sides to make sure adequate surface area is available for bonding. The last thing you want is to step on the pane and pop it into the forepeak. You could also do the reverse and affix the clear plastic on the outside, but you'd need to bevel the edges to make it look neat. Any decent plastic shop should be able to do it for you for under $50 if they have a bit of scrap that they would otherwsier toss. I've dabbled with similar projects for the companionway boards. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

It's great to have all these creative repair ideas

No doubt that these would better preserve the 23-ness of the vessel. But I was really hoping to get some information on replacement. :) WestMarine/BoatUS for example seem to have lots of replacement hatches. I'm just not sure what matters in the selection. Does anyone have any experience with replacement?

not me

Nope............that's one of the projects I've often thought I'd like to do for my boat but never found a suitable hatch cover. I envy the smoked glass forward hatches on the newer boats. I did, however, have a glass shop make for me a 2 piece smoked plexi companionway hatch "boards". That gets some nice light into the cabin. If anyone finds a suitable forward hatch let me know!

Hatch for a 28.5

Looking to find where to get a replacement front hatch for our 1985 28.5 hunter, possibly through a wholesaler or discount selling. $450 is a lot for a window and not sure it's worth that much of an investment for our boat. Been looking on ebay but never see one for a 19 1/2 x 19 1/2" opening. Any leads are appreciated. :)
