I love my 29.5 dearly, but have always considered the forward cleat location (IN the anchor locker!!) a design flaw, and a real pain in the behind. My winter/spring project for this layup period is to add two cleats on the outside. Have any other 29.5 owners tackled this job?...doesn't look too terribly difficult (although access might be a problem). Thanks in advance...

Bow Cleats Missing?
Interesting question. My 1996 29.5 has two bow cleats. The cleat in the anchor locker I always assumed was for the anchor rode when at anchor. It is only convenient to use the anchor locker cleat when the locker is open and I am sitting in it dealing with the anchor rode. I use the forward cleats for dock lines and I can not imagine a boat without cleats forward. Seems like an unusual configuration. Wonder if I read your question correctly?

I have a '94 model
I'm thinking that Hunter "corrected" the problem with the '95 or '96 models. Still, I think that I will try to mount cleats on the outside. There are two small access hatches in the V-berth, and I should be able to use them (with a little help from a friend) to add the cleats and backing plate.

Actually, I think I may mount them
on the toe, just above the rubrail. The 29.5 does not have a toerail of sorts, and I have noticed on other models that the cleats are mounted on the toe area under the bowsprit.

Yup.. in '94 the cleats were inside the locker
One of my winter projects will be to mount two cleats in a more accessible loction on my '94 Hunter 29.5. I'm thinking I'll put them where the '95 and '96 put them. There are two access panels underneath and it doesn't look too bad. I plan to back them with aluminum plates. My question is whether to glass these aluminum plates in or just epoxy them in place? What does it look like underneath on the 95 and 96?

I will just epoxy...
The BACK cleats are epoxied (as well as the present forward cleats in the anchor locker), so ,I don't really see any reason to glass them...

Andy - I'll be on my boat later this week and will get a photo of the bow cleats. I was hoping it would be shrink wrapped for the winter, now I hope it is still open. If all works out, I will be able to post a picture late on Oct 26th when I get back home.

Tim, 5200 is more adhesive than sealant, 4200...
is more sealant than adhesive. Both are good products. If you want a strong bond that will not come apart below the waterline use 5200. Terry

Larry, with all due respect...
I'm usually not the one (forward) trying to grap dock lines and attach them to the cleats. My girlfriend is, and she hates having to pull the anchor locker open, and trip all over the anchor trying to get to the docklines. I do share your feelings about the lack of midships cleats though....those would be handy also, as it would be nice to use a springline.
