My Forum - Don't Turn it off please

Phil, PLEASE don't shut down "My Forum". Presently I monitor Big Boats, Racing, Ask a Hunter Owner, Site Talk and Sailor to Sailor. Sometimes also the specialist guest forum. With over 150 posts a day on the whole site it would be impossible to handle them all. Good site so please don't take this backward step.

Repeat: Don't turn off My Forum

I'll second Donalex; PLEASE don't shut down "My Forum". There are too many posts in the general forum on some days and tough to find relevant posts. My Forum lets me see the ones I'm interested in; couldn't be more useful. Without it (as in the last few days), I'm all but reluctant to stop by this site. Even this visit, I couldn't zero in on anything specific to my mid-sized (290) interests. Really, really surprised you'd consider yanking THE key to having sailors visit (at least, Hunter owners); please don't take this backward step. If anything, add it to all the sites and you'll increase site visits.

Regarding My HOW

Check out this link and let me know if it does the same (or close to the same) job for you: http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums2/menumodel.tpl?fno=0 I'm interested in your input and thoughts on this.

My How

Phil, The model number link could be helpful in finding posts about specific boats. But it seems it might only be as good as the information that we put in from this side. For example, it did not show the thread I started about the 356 struts just over a week ago. I don't recall if I entered a boat model. It might work better if we could select multiple models or boats over or under a certain size. Much of what we talk about are systems. Things that are applicable to my 356 could be useful to a wide range of boat sizes. Other times, the questions are very model specific. Like anything else, time is precious and most want to accumulate the best information in the smallest amount of time. It is a little easier for me, because I can look at it while at work, and I do. Some days it stays live all day and I just refresh every so often. The only thing I have noticed so far that seems ackward, is that with the entire thread shown, there isn't an obvious indication of what I've already read. OK, at least it isn't obvious so far. I also seems that the left side (with the orginal post) is tracking with the most recent reply on the right side. That makes sense on one level, but it may have some unintended consequences. If someone posts something and it does not get a fairly consistent or prompt reply, it will end up well down the list. Sometimes these low response questions are very pertinent, often apply to a specific model and it is important that the potential responders can find them. This might be most dificult when we have those days when some topics get pretty active. Not sure what the solution might be here, but I will try to watch what boat type I put in from now on when it is applicable. Beyond that, I like the new format. Like anything else, it represents some change and that takes a little getting used to. But it also provides us with an opportunity to think about how we use the site and what might be the best ways to make it even better. Thanks Phil, in a few years of boat ownership I've learned many things. Some of it from books, some of it from just doing the projects on the boat and much of it here. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Never Mind

Phil, Just figured out the sort by recent topics and sort by recent replies button. Actually, that might work pretty well. Education may be the answer. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Another mod of My HOW forum

For those of you reading this on a site other than the Hunter forum, this My HOW forum you keep reading about allows you to select various boat models and forums and make a 'custom' forum out of those critera. I've got an idea for a newer version of this forum that will meet my needs for low maintenance and act more like the old My HOW forum. Plus, it would be available on all sites. My plan is to do the coding over the weekend and hopefully have it ready to test Monday.

To Phil from Tom

Phil, The issue isn't tracking just 1 model (the Cherubini forum gives me the older 33 like mine and more); I'll miss the ability to track an eclectic selection of models that may not make sense to others to group together but works for me. With MyHOW I can track all the Cherubinis, plus the other 32-42 foot models, plus select others. I lose that with the new forum structure (unless I am missing something). BUT, I've been a long time HOW visitor and your improvements and changes to date have been on the money, so I trust your judgement and will go along for the ride. BTW, registration is no issue for me. I agree with some others who have said it is a positive in many ways. Best regards, Tom FitzGibbon

Make it so ...

I've been using the new forum since it came up and think it's a significant improvement over the old format. Way to go, Phil!

Gotta be kidding

Someone said: "This will make the wise guys a little more aware that some one is watching them!" Wise guys can read. C'mon, I sure like Phil better than the TSA and the rest of the big brother guys out there. The NICE part is that there IS a trusted person not watching, but participating and helping. Dang, if it comes down to having to be civil only because someone is watching, we're ALL in BIG trouble. Great job, Phil and the Entire Crew, keep up the good work. Stu
