i'm a willing-to-learn novice trying to install a cdi ff2 furling system. of course, only after i purchased the furler did i get to the part of the instructions that says i need a toggle connection at the top of the forestay, as oppposed to the "tee-ball" connection that is there. i'd like to take off the forestay and bring it to a rigger to change the connection to a toggle. i've unstepped the mast. how do i remove the forestay at the mast? does it have to be cut? please tell me "no". p.s. the manufacturer says the "tee-ball" connection can be used, but that it causes undue stress on the forestay, and it could fail. anybody have any experience with this?

Chris, I have the same problem, in fact, I was just about to write the same question to this list as you did when I thought I'd better check to see if anyone else had anything to say about the CDI Roller Furler. My boat, of course, is much smaller than yours, but obviously with the same headstay attachment at the top. Once before I had a question about rigging, and got the name of the company that makes the rigging for the H18.5, but I've since lost that. If anyone out there has that information, that might be the way to go -- I wouldn't think that a new headstay with a toggle on both ends would cost that much. I'd rather do that than run the risk of having the mast come down because the forestay snapped. Forestay for H23

Hello Chris, A couple of things come to mind right off the bat- --I believe the H23 was built with two different masts- One by Z-Spar (Which I have), and the other manufacturer escapes my memory at the moment. This may have a bearing on how the forestay is attached to your mast; Which mast do you have? On my H23, the forestay is connected to the mast at the jib sheet sheave assembly, with a Clevis pin that is accessible without having to remove the forestay/jib sheet sheeve assembly. The assemblies can be viewed at the US Spars homepage (www.usspars.com), by looking under masts, then Hunter Marine, then the 23; I have the Z-190 R rig with part #1051 as my forestay attachment point. (Confused yet? ;o) If your mast looks anything like this, furler installation should be a snap. Don't forget to factor in the fact that your forestay/jib tack are in the anchor locker, and that you'll need to raise the furler drum a couple inches to be able to access them... Jpn's response is right on target. Which mast do yoy have. Then call CDI and make sure you ask for Joe. He will steer you right. It is good to see excellent answers from you folks. The big problem is of course the anchor well as the forestay is attached inside the anchor locker.

I left the T ball

When we bought our H23 we had a new forstay with CDI furler added. The rigger left the t ball attachment but went up one size in cable diameter. We used it two years without any problems. last year we left it off and used the hank-on 110 rather than the furling 135. It's not as good in light air, but from 5k and up it's much better than the 135.
