A larger area than is easily opened and closed on the foredeck of my O'Day 22 (1972) is soft and needs recored. What about replacing the balsam core with foam core. Is it practical to seperate the deck from the cabin overhead at the side seams to give access to the core? The boat is strictly used in fresh water, wind never excedes 12/15 kts, and is trailored to and from the lake.

replacing wet/damaged core

Yes you can replace damaged core from the underside of the deck - this is done many times to avoid the need for cosmetic repairs on the topsides. It is a bit trickier because working overhead means gravity is working against you, but those issues can be overcome. Generally speaking, we recommend replacing any materials used in the original laminate with the same materials, but I don't see any problems if you would prefer to use foam. In fact, balsa is beginning to be in short supply due to the growth of the composites industry, although I'm sure you could get some for this repair. If you need help or advice on how to proceed, contact me and we'll discuss the specifics of your project.
