That certainly can be a design. Such an arrangement could be to deal with a mast design that needs structural support. Lighter weight mast would need such support. A lighter weight mast would improve speed, performance. Perhaps the mast you have is taller than standard.

Such a design could add complexity to your tuning of the mast once you get it up. Goal is to balance the tensions so that the mast stays in column. Fore and aft some bend is ok. Lateral bending in the mast is a no no.

That is exactly what the other FORD20 skipper told me. He said to fasten the shrouds to the outer chainplates first and then use the "inner" shrouds to tune the mast to make sure it is vertically aligned. Thanks again for your thoughts. Have a great day!
