I'm posting this note from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as I've been a member of this group for many years: "Over the last few years Virginia has made significant strides in reducing pollution that enters our streams and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. Unfortunately a recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency says efforts to clean the Bay are losing ground because not enough is being done to address ‘stormwater’—the rain water that runs off our buildings, parking lots and roads carrying nutrients, sediments and other pollutants. Right now we have an opportunity to reduce the polluting effects of stormwater. But we need to let the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) know that citizens are concerned about the issue. Tell DCR to fully protect the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s rivers from stormwater pollution. DCR is about to make new rules that govern how local governments control stormwater pollution. These rules currently fall short of what the Bay and our rivers need. DCR is collecting public comments until 5pm on Friday, December 14, 2007. Take a minute to email DCR your concerns. One third of the nutrient and sediment pollution that reaches the Chesapeake Bay comes from developed land. These pollutants are the culprits behind “dead zones,” algal blooms and fish kills. If DCR makes a few key changes to the Commonwealth’s stormwater rules we can minimize its polluting effects. We all deserve clean rivers and a healthy Bay. Sincerely, Emily Francis"

Warren, all new construction in Maryland

must have storm water control systems and plans as a part of the construction process but the Choptank River at Crisfield is the second most polluted River in Maryland because the best effort are less than adequate for the rapid growth rate in the Crisfield area. I always hate seeing the rainbows of oily water in shopping center parking lots when it rains.

A pigeon craps about 30#s/year!!!

All of that crap eventually washes into the river and into the bay. Dogs produce even more crap. Wetlands are the only way that I know of too treat storm runoff. The plants in the wetlands absorb the nutrients before they reach the bay. Does VA have any plans to increase wetlands??? Cattails are excellant at absorbing nutrients!!!!

Warren - Great post!

There needs to be more citizen input to help support the environment and this is certainly one way to do it. We all can benefit from cleaner rivers and cleaner stormwater is certainly one thing that can help.
