I'm posting this note from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as I've been a member of this group for many years:"Over the last few years Virginia has made significant strides in reducing pollution that enters our streams and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. Unfortunately a recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency says efforts to clean the Bay are losing ground because not enough is being done to address ‘stormwater’—the rain water that runs off our buildings, parking lots and roads carrying nutrients, sediments and other pollutants. Right now we have an opportunity to reduce the polluting effects of stormwater. But we need to let the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) know that citizens are concerned about the issue. Tell DCR to fully protect the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s rivers from stormwater pollution. DCR is about to make new rules that govern how local governments control stormwater pollution. These rules currently fall short of what the Bay and our rivers need. DCR is collecting public comments until 5pm on Friday, December 14, 2007. Take a minute to email DCR your concerns. One third of the nutrient and sediment pollution that reaches the Chesapeake Bay comes from developed land. These pollutants are the culprits behind “dead zones,” algal blooms and fish kills. If DCR makes a few key changes to the Commonwealth’s stormwater rules we can minimize its polluting effects. We all deserve clean rivers and a healthy Bay. Sincerely,Emily Francis"
