If someone is so inclined, and has the time there is a hell of a deal on a boat on ebay right now. 83 model 38' Island Trader. Has had an interior fire, in the galley area. Says bad damage but the add says mostly smoke, all interior bulkheads are good. Looks bad, but looks like mostly smoke. Bidding now at 1000 bucks. Boat is in Essex, NY.

Call the ship breakers that boat is finished. I wouldn't take it as a gift. I probably wouldn't accept the job of rebuilding it at my labor rate plus material open ended.

I think you can buff that out of the gelcote. An afternoon or two at the most.

After looking at that wreck the only use for that boat is to make swizzle sticks and I also noticed that they cut the mast at the deck? :confused: not the mizzen but the main and he indicates that only the mizzen was damaged so replacing the rigging would be a big expense not to mention replacing the sails

The windlass and the bow sprite will be worth the most. That nice garage it is in will stink for a looooooong time.

Most surface things are repairable, I would be worried about the effects of the heat on the integrity of the Hull where the heat may have hurt it but you don't know till your out on the water taking a pounding.
Does some one have any experience with what heat does to the Glass...

When you inspect a good hull you gently tap it with a light plastic mallet when you inspect this hull you leave out the light mallet and the gentle part. I inspect barn floors with a sledge hammer. You can't hurt a 2x12 oak plank with a heavy hammer and you can't hurt a fiber glass hull with a 3 pound rubber mallet but you can darn sure determine if the bounce is still in the glass. If it seems mushy it must be cut out and replaced.
If I didn't have anything else to do (like that will ever happen) and they would deliver it to my place along with a check for ten thousand dollars I might take it but I certainly wouldn't pay for the acquistion. It would cost thousands in material to clean that up and make a boat out of it again.
