Hi Maine, I posted here cause I could not get a pic to load on your original thread. I have some butyl tape from a previous job, can't remember however, its about 3/4" wide, heavy 1/8" thick, very pliable grey tape. Is this what I should use for bedding deck hardware. Thanks Red

bedding chainplates

I have been thinking why not use pipe thread paste instead of caulking. If you are familiar with this paste - it is used to water proof the connection. I use them with 100% success. Since the chain plates are constantly moving I would think this can be used to fill the crack and make it waterproof forever. One of its characteristics is that it never dries up and keeps its shape. It has the consistency of tooth paste. What do you all think?

Butyl would be much more appropriate for this purpose. There is a lot of difference in sealing threads on a pipe and filling a moving void.
